LOST BY NEGLECT

How many souls are in hell today through neglect!  They never meant to be there, but occupation with other things resulted in neglect of God’s warning, “How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation?” Heb 2:3.

Are you too busy to think about your soul?  What if you die before being born again, Jn 3:3,7?  Too late, you’ll have all eternity in hell to think, and bewail the folly that neglected God’s salvation.

You don’t believe in hell?  What if you’re wrong?  Remember, Jesus Christ warned of the need to be saved from hell and fitted for heaven, e.g., Mk 9;43-47.  Will you dare to call Him a liar?

To be saved, admit that you’re a sinner without any righteousness; believe that Jesus Christ died in your place for your sins, and that in response to that belief God pardons all your sin and will receive you into heaven.

JUSTICE FOR ALL?

Only the naive will deny that money determines the outcome of many a trial today, so that all but the guilty plead for justice - a plea, however, unlikely to change a legal system gone awry.

But there is an assize - the Great White Throne described in Rev 20:11 - where justice will be dispensed.  Those arraigned there will be all who will have died without having been born again, Jn 3:3,7, and the sentence will be the same for all - consignment to eternal torment in the lake of fire, Rev 20:14,15.

The only way to escape that judgment is to admit that you’re a sinner, and believe that when Christ died on the cross it was in your place for your sins.  What you need is mercy.  Failure to believe in Christ as your Savior guarantees you justice at the Great White Throne.

WHY NOT MORE POSITIVE?

A reader has asked why these Gospel messages aren’t more positive - why do they stress the somber, and warn repeatedly of the danger of entering hell?

It is because warning is the very essence of the Biblical Gospel.  Christ repeatedly warned of the need to be saved from hell, e.g., “It is profitable that one bodily member perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell” Mt 5:29.  “Ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?” Mt 23:33.  “Fear him which hath power to cast into hell” Lk 12:5.  Concerning one who had gone to hell, He said, “In hell ... being in torments ... he cried, Have mercy on me ... for I am tormented in this flame” Lk 16:23.

A gospel expunged of warning may be polite and unoffending, but it is false and deadly, for no one can be saved from hell until fear of going there impels the cry, “God be merciful to me a sinner” Lk 18:13, and the question, “What must I do to be saved?” Ac 16:30.

The new “positive” gospel invites men to simply “believe in Christ,” but if you have never known the fear of entering hell, the need of repentance, and the imperative of believing that when Christ died on the cross it was in your place, for your sins, to save you from hell and fit you for heaven, you have not been saved, and are still on your way to hell.  Belief in the historicity of Christ, but apart from repentance, and acknowledgement of yourself as a sinner, saves no one.  Belief in the reality of hell as the destination, not just of “bad” people, but of all men, is essential for salvation, for it is written, “There is none righteous .... for all have sinned” Ro 3:10,23.  “Except a man be born again, he cannot see (enter) the kingdom of God” Jn 3:3.  “Except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish” Lk 13:3.

GOOD ENOUGH FOR HEAVEN?

Contrary to the popular, but erroneous idea that a degree of goodness fits men for heaven, and a degree of badness, for hell, God says that no one is good enough to enter heaven, and no one so bad that he must enter hell.

How then is heaven to be attained, and hell escaped?

(1)  Accept God’s indictment that “There is none that doeth good (for) all have sinned and come short” Ro 3:12,23

(2)  believe that when Jesus Christ died on the cross it was in your place, for your sins

(3)  accept God’s assurance that in response to that faith He will pardon all your sin and receive you into heaven, “He who believes on the Son has everlasting life: and he who believes not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abides on him” Jn 3:36.

Failure to accept that indictment, to exercise that faith, excludes you from heaven, and assures you of hell.

THE LAKE OF FIRE

Refusal to believe in the lake of fire as the eternal destination of all who die without having been born again, makes God a liar, Rev 20:14-15; nor do baptism, church membership, moral living, etc., constitute that new birth which saves men and fits them for heaven.  It occurs only when you are willing to

(1)  accept God’s indictment that you are a sinner without a shred of righteousness, as it is written,”There is none righteous” Ro 3:10,

(2)  believe that when Christ died on the cross it was as your Substitute, for your sins, “Christ died for the ungodly” Ro 5:6,

(3)  believe that in response to that personal faith in Christ, God will pardon all your sin, and receive you into heaven, “He who believes on Him is not condemned: but he who believes not is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God” Jn 3:18.

You say, It’s too easy, surely I must do something.  God says, “By grace are you saved through faith ... it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast” Eph 2:8-9.

THE END OF THE WORLD

According to Scripture the end of the world is at least 1007 years off, because the seven-year Tribulation and the Millennium must come first, but an event of more immediate concern is the coming of Christ to remove His Church to heaven.  His return is imminent and it will seal the doom of many, for Scripture warns that at that instant every unbeliever who has heard the Gospel, will have no further opportunity to be saved, 2 Th 2.  If you haven’t repented and trusted Christ as your Savior your danger is great.  He could return today!  God warns. “Behold, now is the accepted time, now is the day of salvation” 2 Co 6:2.  Tomorrow could be too late!

FILTHY RAGS

...is God's description of the good deeds of all who hope to enter heaven on the basis of moral living, rather than through the new birth (John 3:3,7) resulting from faith in Christ as Savior,

We are all unclean, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags (Isaiah 64:6.)

If, then, this is God's view of man's best, what about our sins?  He says,

Your iniquities have separated between you and your God
(Isaiah 59:2)

and unless our sins are forgiven, the end result of that separation will be banishment, first to hell, and then eternally to the lake of fire, (Revelation 20:14).

The way to heaven is "Not by works of righteousness" (Titus 3:5), but by faith in Christ as Savior, for only "The blood of Christ cleanses us from all sin"(1 John 1:7).

FELIX TREMBLED

“As he (Paul) reasoned of righteousness, self control, and judgment to come, Felix trembled, and said, Go thy way ... when I have a convenient season, I will call for thee” Acts 24:25, and  during the next two years he talked often with Paul, but on being recalled to Rome, he left Paul in prison, and there is no record that he ever believed the Gospel.

What remorse must haunt Felix as he, from the torment of God’s prison (hell), awaits consignment to the eternal torment of the lake of fire, Rev 20!

What if this should be the last time you hear the Gospel, and you join Felix to await the same awful fate?  God warns, “Now is the day of salvation” 2 Cor 6:2.  Tomorrow may be too late!

HOW PATIENT IS GOD?

His patience is great, but not infinite, hence His warning, “My Spirit shall not always strive with man” Gen 6:3, “He who being often reproved, hardens his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy” Pr 29:1, “Behold, now is the accepted time ... now is the day of salvation” 2 Co 6:2.

Your rejection of the Gospel today could be the one that ends God’s patience?  Then your soul is doomed eternally though you may live for many more years, for no one can be saved apart from the conviction of the Holy Spirit.

Today God says, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved” Ac 16:31.  Tomorrow may be too late, so that on the day of judgment He will command you, “Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire” Mt 25:41.

HOW BAD ARE YOU?

By God’s standard (the only one that matters), far worse than you think.  He says, “There is none righteous” Ro 3:10; “All our righteousnesses are as filthy rags,” Isa 64:6; we are like a body covered with “wounds, and bruises, and putrefying sores” Isa 1:6, and at death, unless cleansed, must enter hell instead of heaven.

Acceptance of that indictment is essential for cleansing, for to insist that I have any righteousness is to make God a liar.  Cleansing (being saved from hell, and fitted for heaven) occurs when I believe that Jesus Christ died in my place, for my sins, God’s assurance to every believer being, “The blood of Jesus Christ... cleanseth us from all sin” 1 Jn 1:7.
