THE DAYS OF LOT

Relative to His return Jesus Christ said that, “As it was in the days of Lot ... thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed” Lk 17:28-30).  What was the character of those days?  Rampant homosexuality in the cities of Lot’s world led God to destroy them (Gen 19).  None can deny that this is the character of our own world, and he is a fool who disbelieves that God’s promised judgment is near.

Scripture states that prior to that judgment, “in the twinkling of an eye” Christ will remove all believers to heaven, and warns that those left, who had rejected the Gospel, will have no further chance to be saved, and though they may survive the terrible judgments of the ensuing seven-year Tribulation era, they will be banished into hell when Christ returns to execute judgment, 1 Co 15; 1 Thes 4; 2 Thes 2.

If He were to come today to remove believers to heaven (and He could), would you be taken up, or left behind to face certain banishment into hell?  To be ready for His coming, (1) admit that you are a sinner without righteousness, (2) believe that He died as your Substitute at Calvary, (3) believe that in response to that faith, God will pardon all your sin and receive you into heaven.  If you are concerned about your soul, or have Bible related questions, please phone.  We’re here to help.

WHAT IS DEATH?

It is the end of all vital function, but Scripture warns  that to die without having been born again is to endure eternal  torment in the lake of fire.  This is called “the second death,” Rev 20:11-15.

Many make arrangements relative to the death and burial of the perishable body, yet give no thought to the fate of the imperishable soul.

Perhaps you have bought life insurance, and a burial plot, etc., but what preparation have you made for your soul?  You say, I’m a faithful church member, I pray and read the Bible daily, I tithe, lead a clean moral life, and try to keep the ten commandments.

These things are commendable, but worthless relative to saving your soul from hell and fitting it for heaven.  What you need is to be born again, Jn 3:3,7, that birth occurring the moment you admit that you’re a sinner, and believe that Christ, died in your place for your sins.  Without that new birth you will die the second death, for “Except a man be born again he cannot see (enter) the kingdom of God.”

NO ROOM

At the birth of Jesus Christ there was no room for Him in the inn, nor are things different today: men still have no room for Him, the proof being that while many profess to believe in Him, they refuse Him control of their lives.  In Rev 3:20 He is seen knocking at the door of the heart, seeking admission; but in Lk 13:23-28 a very different picture is seen.  there it is men - religious men - who knock at heaven’s door, and Christ Who refuses them admission, His warning being , “These shall go away into everlasting punishment” (Mt 25:46).

Have you responded to His knock by trusting Him as your Savior, and giving Him control of your life?  What if He should cease to knock, and tomorrow should find you knocking at His door only to hear Him echo the reply you have given Him - NO ROOM!  Then your fate is terrible to contemplate, for it makes you one of those who “shall go away into everlasting punishment.”

THE BAKER’S EMPTY BASKET

The baker of Gen 40:17 discovered, too late, that the fowls had eaten the contents of the basket on his head, so that he appeared before Pharaoh with nothing to present.  So will it be with those whom the baker represents, when they stand before God at the end of life, for he represents all who hope to enter heaven on the basis of their good works, God’s warning being that salvation is a free gift to be accepted by trusting Jesus Christ as Savior, “not by works, lest any man should boast” Eph 2:8.

The baker’s chagrin pictures the eternal misery of the man who hopes to be saved by church membership, Bible study, prayer, generosity, etc.  That man’s “basket” will prove to be as empty as the baker’s, and his fate will be the same, for the baker died twice metaphorically: he was beheaded, and hanged.  He whom the baker represents will also die twice: once, physically; and then spiritually, see Rev 20:14.

SEVEN YEARS OF FAMINE

That famine mentioned in Gen 41 is God’s picture of the impending seven-year Tribulation, and of the eternal state of unbelievers.  The remedy was to store corn during the preceding seven years of plenty, this being God’s symbolic warning of the need to prepare now for the coming Tribulation, and for eternity.  Egyptians who hadn’t saved corn during the years of plenty would have died.  He who doesn’t now store up the Bread of Life (Jesus Christ), will have to endure the horrors of the coming Tribulation here on earth, and then eternal torment in the lake of fire.

How is that preparation made?  (1) Admit that you’re a sinner without any righteousness, (2) believe that Christ loved you enough to die in your place for your sins, and (3) believe that in response to that faith God will pardon all your sins and receive you into heaven.

INDEPENDENT BUT ENSLAVED

America’s celebration of independence reminds us that others have also won political freedom, but what is seldom realized is that a worse enslavement, from which few escape, binds every man.  It is bondage to sin; and unless delivered, men will endure eternal imprisonment and torment in the lake of fire, Revelation 20:14-15.

Jesus Christ has died so that men may escape this terrible fate, but freedom comes only to those who admit that they are sinners, believe that Christ loved them enough to die in their stead for their sins, and that in response to that faith God pardons every sin, and will receive them into heaven.

Liberty bought with men's blood is of little value without the spiritual freedom which cost Christ His life.

Political liberty is only for time: that offered as God's priceless gift, is eternal.  Accept it today.  Tomorrow may be too late.

 THE TWA PLANE DISASTER

The crash of the airliner which killed 229 on July 17,1996, stunned America, and dramatized the suddenness with which death sometimes comes, but it eclipsed the grim fact that every minute 100 souls go from time into eternity - a staggering 6,000 every hour!  Because those deaths are not dramatic, however, no one gives them a thought, but that inevitable hour lies before all men.  Some hour you will be among the 6,000 who will die.

The wise man prepares for that inescapable hour, the fool doesn’t: he rushes through the few brief years of time, ignoring God’s warning that all who die without having had a second, a spiritual birth, Jn 3:3,7, will go first to hell, and then to the eternal torment of the lake of fire, Rev 20.

What if you had been on that stricken plane?  Where would your soul be now?

FREE CORN

During a famine Joseph’s brothers went twice to Egypt to buy corn, and twice found their money returned in their corn sacks.  Beyond demonstrating Joseph’s kindness in giving them the corn as a gift, this teaches truth relative to salvation.  It can’t be bought!

Moral living, church membership, generosity, Bible study, prayer, good deeds can’t buy a pardon for sin.  It must be received as God’s gift, as it is written, “The wages of sin is death: but the gift of God  is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” Ro 6:23; “For by grace are ye saved through faith: and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast” Eph 2:8-9.

DEMOCRACY OF THE DEAD

The unbelieving dead are all equal.  All are poor, condemned, guilty, powerless, excluded from heaven, without friends, in eternal darkness, eternal torment.  All weep.  None are proud, none successful, none happy, none religious, none have hope, none laugh.  In their hideous hopeless equality in hell they all await the second death: consignment to the eternal torment of the lake of fire, Rev 20.

Only the second birth announced by Jesus Christ in John 3:3,7, can save you from the second death, from joining that dread democracy of the dead.  To be born again (1) admit that you’re a sinner without any righteousness (2) believe that Christ died in your place for your sins, and (3) believe that in response to that faith God will pardon your sin, and receive you into heaven.

HAVE A GOOD ETERNITY

“Have a good day” is the parroted phrase on the lips of multitudes, but one I’ve never heard is, “Have a good eternity.”

A good day may have many degrees of goodness, but no such distinctions mark eternity.  The bliss of heaven, and the torment of hell are in the superlative degree, and they are eternal.  God deals in absolutes.  On earth there is hope that if today is bad, tomorrow may be better.  No such hope exists in hell.  Its torment is eternal.  You have little control over how your day will be, but you do have control over your eternity.  To be sure of heaven, admit that you’re a sinner, believe that Christ died in your place for your sins, and that in response to that faith God will pardon all your sin and receive you into heaven.  To be sure of hell continue as you are, for all are born on the road  that ends there, hence Christ’s warning, “Ye must be born again, for except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God” Jn 3:3,7.
